Reinhard Micko Biography
The pianist Reinhard Micko, born in Vienna in 1970, began to play the piano autodidactically as a teenager. In 1988 he graduates from high school and completes the following jazz piano studies at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna in 1994.
Since about 1990 he plays in numerous bands and also gains rich experience as a composer. In many projects and bands he also plays synthesizer and keyboards parallel to the piano, his main artistic instrument is the acoustic piano.
Since 1996 he has been continuously active as a bandleader and subsequently produces several CDs under his own name with mostly his own compositions. For a long time his preferred instrumentation is the piano trio with double bass and drums, although over the years he has added bassists Karl Sayer, Georg Breinschmid, Peter Herbert and Matthias Pichler, and on drums Uli Soyka, Christian Salfellner, Wolfgang Reisinger and Klemens Marktl as fellow musicians to his band.
In 2017 the CD "Coming Home of the "Reinhard Micko quartet" with Klaus Gesing saxophone / bass clarinet, Peter Herbert, bass and Peter Primus Frosch, drums is produced.
Reinhard Micko plays with countless musicians of the Austrian jazz and popular music scene, which leads to more and more international collaborations.
In 1993, for example, Wolfgang Muthspiel participated as a guest musician in the CD recording of the Erich Quartet which was Micko's first band.
From 1997-1999 Reinhard Micko plays some productions with Mathias Rüegg and the Vienna Art Orchestra and also participates in the recording of the CD "20th Anniversary".
In 1998 he plays a tour through Austria, Germany and Switzerland with the band "Full Circle" of the exceptional saxophonist Harry Sokal, the other musicians are Gerald Veasley on bass, Jojo Mayer on drums, and Stephan Maas on percussion.
In the same year he participates in a live concert CD recording of the drummer Uli Soyka with Klaus Dickbauer, saxophone, Frank Schwinn, guitar, Peter Herbert, bass and Jamey Haddad, percussion, for which Dave Liebman, saxophone is invited as star guest.
In 1999 Reinhard Micko is on tour with "Christian Muthspiel & Motley Mothertongue", with Austria's figurehead Wolfgang Muthspiel, guitar, Mathieu Michel, trumpet, Beni Schmid, violin and D.K. Dyson on vocals. From recordings of these live concerts the CD "Parts of a Shattered Lovestory" is produced.
In the following years he is involved in numerous concerts and CD recordings of well-known musicians of the Austrian scene such as Lorenz Raab, trumpet, Gina Schwarz, bass and Robert Bachner, trombone.
At the same time he dives deep into Brazilian music, which leads to performances with Allegre Corrêa, guitar, Izabel Padovani, vocals, Ronaldo Saggiorato, bass, Fernando Paiva drums and many more.
Crossing styles, Reinhard Micko has been on stage for many years with the world music vocalist Shlomit Butbul and has played several tours across Europe with the Norwegian singer Rebekka Bakken, who is signed to Universal records.
In 2005 Reinhard Micko acts as recording supervisor for the CD "Joys and Desires" of the Jazzbigband Graz with John Hollenbeck, the following year he performs this program live at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In the same year he performs with his trio at the Jazzfest Wien.
His music is very expressive and captivates with its diverse moods and colorings. He draws from a wealth of harmonic experience and finds a clear melodic line, which coupled with a wide variety of grooves and rhythms, some in odd time signatures, gives cohesion to his playing. Since improvisations are an essential part of his pieces, he also brings expressive musician personalities into his bands, who enrich and enliven his music with their improvisational skills.
"When Reinhard Micko takes to the piano solo-pianistically, sometimes time seems to stand still. Completely devoted to his music and his instrument, he is able to create an intense feeling of closeness and sound intimacy that one can hardly escape and would not want to!"
His musical versatility is sonically documented on more than 20 CDs and his concert tours take him through half of Europe and to many different festivals.
In 2005 Reinhard Micko was nominated for the Hans Koller Award "Sideman of the Year", in 2006 he won the award "CD of the Year" with the Robert Bachner Quintet for the album "Travelling Hard".
As a teacher for jazz piano, ear training and ensemble playing he accompanies countless students on their musical way. Again and again he is engaged as a musical recording director for CD productions.
Currently Reinhard Micko lives as a freelance musician in Vienna.

Der Pianist Reinhard Micko, geboren 1970 in Wien, beginnt als Jugendlicher autodidaktisch Klavier zu spielen. 1988 maturiert er und schließt das folgende Jazz-Klavierstudium am Konservatorium der Stadt Wien 1994 ab.
Seit ca. 1990 spielt er in zahlreichen Bands und sammelt auch als Komponist reichhaltige Erfahrung. In vielen Projekten und Bands spielt er parallel zum Klavier auch Synthesizer und Keyboards, sein künstlerisches Hauptinstrument ist das akustische Klavier.
Seit 1996 ist er kontinuierlich als Bandleader tätig und produziert in der Folge einige CDs unter eigenem Namen mit großteils eigenen Kompositionen. Lange Zeit ist seine bevorzugte Besetzung das Klavier-Trio mit Kontrabass und Schlagzeug,
wobei er sich im Laufe der Jahre die Bassisten Karl Sayer, Georg Breinschmid, Peter Herbert und Matthias Pichler, und am Schlagzeug Uli Soyka, Christian Salfellner, Wolfgang Reisinger und Klemens Marktl als Mitmusiker in seine Band holt.

Reinhard Micko spielt mit unzähligen Musikern der österreichischen Jazz- und Popularmusikszene, was zu immer mehr internationalen Kooperationen führt.
So wirkt 1993 Wolfgang Muthspiel als Gast-Musiker bei der CD-Aufnahme des Erich Quartett, Mickos erster Band, mit.

In den folgenden Jahren ist er an zahlreichen Konzerten und CD-Recordings von namhaften Musikern der österreichischen Szene wie z.B. Lorenz Raab, Trompete, Gina Schwarz, Bass und Robert Bachner, Posaune beteiligt.
Parallel dazu taucht er tief in die brasilianische Musik ein, was zu Auftritten mit Allegre Corrêa, Gitarre, Izabel Padovani, Vocals, Ronaldo Saggiorato, Bass, Fernando Paiva Drums u.v.a.m. führt. Für die Band der Sängerin Celia Mara fungiert er mehrere Jahre als Musikalischer Leiter und Arrangeur.
Stilübergreifend steht Reinhard Micko viele Jahre lang mit der Worldmusic-Vokalistin Shlomit Butbul auf der Bühne und spielt einige Tourneen quer durch Europa mit der norwegischen Sängerin Rebekka Bakken, die bei Universal-Records unter Vertrag steht.
Im Jahr 2005 ist Reinhard Micko als Aufnahmeleiter für die CD "Joys and Desires" der Jazzbigband Graz mit John Hollenbeck tätig, im Jahr darauf spielt er dieses Programm live auf dem North Sea Jazz Festival. Im selben Jahr tritt er mit seinem Trio auf dem Jazzfest Wien auf.
Seine Musik ist sehr ausdrucksstark und besticht durch ihre vielfältigen Stimmungen und Färbungen. Er schöpft aus einem reichhaltigen harmonischen Erfahrungsschatz und findet zu einer klaren Melodik, die gepaart mit unterschiedlichsten Grooves und Rhythmen, zum Teil auch in ungeraden Taktarten, seinem Spiel Zusammenhalt gibt. Da die Improvisationen essenzieller Bestandteil seiner Stücke sind, holt er sich auch ausdrucksstarke Musiker-Persönlichkeiten in seine Bands, die seine Musik durch ihre Improvisationskünste bereichern und beleben.
"Wenn sich Reinhard Micko solo-pianistisch ans Klavier begibt, scheint manchmal die Zeit stillzustehen. Völlig hingegeben an seine Musik und sein Instrument ist er imstande, ein intensives Gefühl der Nähe und Klang-Intimität herzustellen, dem man sich kaum entziehen kann und gar nicht möchte!"
Seine musikalische Vielseitigkeit ist auf über 20 CDs klanglich dokumentiert und seine Konzert-Tourneen führen ihn durch halb Europa und auf viele verschiedene Festivals.
Reinhard Micko ist 2005 für den Hans Koller Preis "Sideman des Jahres" nominiert, 2006 gewinnt er mit dem Robert Bachner Quintett den Preis "CD des Jahres" für das Album "Travelling Hard".
Als Pädagoge für Jazz-Klavier, Gehörbildung und Ensemble-Spiel begleitet er unzählige Studenten auf ihrem musikalischen Weg. Immer wieder wird er auch als musikalischer Aufnahmeleiter für CD-Produktionen engagiert.
Momentan lebt Reinhard Micko als freiberuflicher Musiker in Wien.
